LUDINGTON — A 39-year-old man was ordered to pay $9,500 in restitution for a conviction of fraudulent use of contractor funds during his sentencing hearing in Mason County’s 51st Circuit Court Tuesday, Oct. 28.
Phillip Edward Roberts, Jr., pleaded guilty to the felony charge, along with a second felony of failure to return rented property valued at $1,000-$20,000, June 17, court records state. Roberts was also sentenced Tuesday to 12 days in jail with credit for two days served; three years probation and $466 in fines and costs.
He rented scaffolding from the local Grand Rental Equipment Rental and Sales business and failed to return it. However, he has since paid the rental business back in full, said Mason County Prosecuting Attorney Beth Hand. The contractor fund fraud charge arose from not completing a job at the Bluefish Kitchen & Bar in Manistee. “He has six months to pay off the $9,500 or he has to do 12 months in jail,” said Prosecutor Hand.
Roberts claimed that he would never be before a judge again during his sentencing hearing April 19, 2016 for a felony conviction of receiving and concealing stolen firearms.
