VICTORY TOWNSHIP — The Michigan Public Service Commission will hold a community hearing in Scottville next month to educate residents about planned expansions to Michigan’s electric transmission system and explain how the public can participate in the planning and approval process.
The hearing comes ahead of significant new transmission projects authorized by the Midcontinent Independent System Operator, or MISO, which manages the high-voltage electric transmission grid across Michigan, 14 other states and the Canadian province of Manitoba.
In December 2024, MISO approved a new group of transmission projects as part of its Long-Range Transmission Plan, including several proposed for Michigan.
The hearing will be held Wednesday, Aug. 12, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the West Shore Community College Center Stage Theater in the Arts & Sciences Center, 3000 N. Stiles Road. Michigan Public Service Commission commissioners and staff will attend.
The commission has updated its filing guidelines for future transmission projects and plans to begin a rulemaking process for transmission line siting applications. Earlier this year, the commission announced changes intended to strengthen public engagement, increase transparency in transmission line routing and provide greater protections for property owners.
Topics to be discussed during the hearing include:
- MISO’s approval process and the planning behind the proposed transmission projects.
- How electric transmission lines are sited in Michigan.
- The commission’s upcoming rulemaking process and opportunities for public comment.
- Opportunities for public participation in future transmission line planning.
