LUDINGTON — City of Ludington residents will have an opportunity next month to learn more about identifying and treating invasive plant species during a public workshop and neighborhood walk hosted in partnership with North Country Cooperative Invasive Species Management Area.
The “Invasive Species Education Workshop and ID Walk” is scheduled for Tuesday, June 10, beginning at 6 p.m. at Ludington City Hall, 400 S. Harrison St.
The workshop will focus on three invasive species commonly found in the Ludington area: Japanese knotweed, invasive bittersweet and tree of heaven. Organizers will discuss effective management strategies, safe herbicide use and available financial assistance programs for treatment efforts.
According to information provided by the city and North Country CISMA, residents can qualify for a 50% cost-share program for invasive species treatments within the city. The program applies to Japanese knotweed, invasive bittersweet and tree of heaven, with the city covering up to $100 per property toward treatment costs.
Additional invasive species eligible for at-cost treatment include garlic mustard, black swallow-wort, phragmites, bristly locust, wild parsnip and European frogbit.
The workshop will also include information about pesticide credits available for core, right-of-way, ornamental and forestry categories, followed by a neighborhood invasive species identification walk.
North Country CISMA and the City of Ludington said invasive species can damage infrastructure, stress utility lines and reduce habitat quality for native wildlife. Organizers encourage early detection and treatment to prevent widespread infestation.
Residents seeking treatment assistance can contact North Country CISMA Technician Emily Fredricks at 231-239-4445 or by email at emily.fredricks@macd.org to schedule a free treatment quote.
