May is Mental Health Awareness Month: A Time to Learn, Connect and Support One Another
By Lori Schummer, Director of Public Relations and Customer Service for West Michigan Community Mental Health
Each May, communities observe Mental Health Awareness Month, a time dedicated to increasing understanding of mental health, reducing stigma and reminding people that help and hope are available.
Mental health affects everyone. Just as we care for our physical health, caring for our mental and emotional well-being is essential to living a healthy and fulfilling life. Yet many individuals and families continue to struggle in silence. Mental Health Awareness Month provides an opportunity to change that by starting conversations, sharing resources and reminding our community that no one has to face challenges alone.
Throughout May, West Michigan Community Mental Health will share information, resources and encouragement across its social media platforms to help educate and support community members. Each location will also offer free green silicone bracelets for anyone who would like one. Green represents hope, strength and support for mental health awareness. Wearing a bracelet can be a simple but powerful way to show solidarity and remind others that mental health matters.
Mental health challenges are more common than many people realize. Stress, anxiety, depression, grief, trauma and life transitions can affect individuals of all ages and backgrounds. By talking openly about mental health, we can reduce stigma and make it easier for people to seek help when they need it.
There are many ways individuals can support mental health in their own lives and communities:
Start conversations. Talking about mental health helps normalize the topic and reminds others they are not alone.
Check in with others. A simple message, phone call or visit can make a meaningful difference for someone who may be struggling.
Practice self-care. Taking time to rest, connect with loved ones, get outside or engage in activities that bring joy can support emotional well-being.
Learn the signs. Understanding common warning signs of mental health struggles can help people recognize when someone may need additional support.
Reach out for help when needed. Seeking support is a sign of strength. Professional services, peer support and community resources are available to help people navigate difficult moments.
At West Michigan Community Mental Health, caring professionals are available to help individuals and families access behavioral health services when they need them. Whether someone is facing a crisis, seeking support for ongoing challenges or simply has questions about available resources, help is available.
If you or someone you know has questions about mental health services or needs support, contact West Michigan Community Mental Health. Staff can help connect people with the care they need.
