EVART – The Spartans junior varsity softball team traveled to Evart on Thursday for a two-game series against the Wildcats, winning both contests.
MCC won the opener 9-4, then outlasted Evart 16-15 in Game 2.
Avery Miller pitched six innings in Game 1, allowing three hits and three walks while striking out 11. She also led the Spartans offensively, going 3-for-4 with a triple, an inside-the-park home run, two RBIs and three runs scored.
Additional contributors included Anya Shatova, who had a triple, two RBIs and a stolen base, and Brielle Cerka, who went 2-for-3 with a triple, a solo home run and two RBIs.
“The girls played a great first game, offensively and defensively,” coach Jeanne Miller said. “They were attacking at the plate and super aggressive on the bases. The baserunning really gave us the edge in Game 1.”
Brooke Hawke started Game 2 for the Spartans, pitching two innings with three strikeouts and five walks. Miller pitched the final three innings, striking out six and walking seven.
Offensively, Miller went 2-for-3 with a double, one run scored and one RBI. Emma Hansen finished 2-for-3 with a double, a triple, two runs scored and three RBIs. Hawke added a hit and two RBIs, while Syren Cohoon had a double, two runs scored and three RBIs.
“The girls held strong and edged out the win,” Miller said. “Proud of them for coming away with two wins.”
