Three seek Ludington mayor; council races contested

LUDINGTON — Three people are vying for the Ludington mayoral position, while there will also be contested races for three open City Council seats. Only one person filed to run for city clerk.

Mayoral candidates are Beth Elliott, Cheri Stibitz and Carol Hoekstra. Current Mayor Mark Barnett announced earlier this year that he will not seek re-election.

None of the current ward councilors are seeking re-election. The candidates are:

• Second Ward: Eric Case and Alex Kazmarski
• Fourth Ward: Marco Iafrate and Jack Stibitz
• Sixth Ward: Brett Vanderwater and Jake Brody

Curtis Shields is the only candidate seeking the clerk position.

All candidates will appear on the Aug. 4 primary election ballot. Voters will be asked to select up to two candidates per race. Because the ward races each have only two candidates and the clerk race has one, those candidates will likely advance to the Nov. 3 general election ballot.

Because there are three mayoral candidates, only two will advance from the primary to the November ballot.

All positions are four-year terms.
