LUDINGTON — A local nonprofit focused on controlling the feral cat population has reached a significant milestone, reporting more than 1,900 cats spayed or neutered through its program.
Community Cats TNR announced that cat No. 1,900, a male tabby from the south Walhalla area, was neutered April 8 at Country Veterinary Clinic by Dr. Katie Vivirito, DVM.
The organization, a volunteer-run nonprofit, works with caregivers throughout Mason County to trap, neuter and return homeless cats, a process commonly known as TNR. The program also includes vaccinations and basic medical care before the animals are returned to their outdoor homes.
According to calculations cited from the University of Washington math department, female cats treated through the program could have produced an estimated 417,000 kittens over seven years if left unaltered.
TNR is widely regarded as the most humane and effective method for controlling feral cat populations. In addition to spay or neuter procedures, cats in the program receive health checks, parasite treatment, rabies and distemper vaccinations, flea and tick treatment, and medication as needed. Each cat is ear-tipped for identification.
Community Cats TNR primarily assists with cats that cannot be safely handled, focusing on trapping and transporting them for care. Residents with pets or friendly stray cats are encouraged to work with their own veterinarians and may seek financial assistance through the Fixing Furry Friends Facebook page by applying for a spay/neuter certificate.
Caregivers feeding unhandled homeless cats in Mason County may contact Community Cats TNR at 231-845-7888 for assistance.
Donations to support spay and neuter services, vaccinations and food can be made by mail to Community Cats TNR, PO Box 384, Ludington, MI 49431, or online at www.nfggive.org/donation/46-3759577.
