SCOTTVILLE — The Mason County Central High School Chess Team ended its season with a 3-3 record. The team’s shortened season ended last Friday when it traveled to Whitehall, where it took a loss and fell to .500.
Spartan Coach Tim Danielson said the 3-3 record is an improvement over last year’s season.
MCC was unable to reschedule its matches against Hart and Orchard View that were missed due to a snow day and illness.
“We turned over a majority of last year’s team with only three returning players,” said Danielson. “I am very pleased that we improved on last year’s record with so many new players.”
The highlight of the season was freshman captain Hudson Miller’s performance who was chasing an individual match perfect season until the end. He fell half a point short of perfection but still finished with an unbeaten record of 24-0-1.
“I really would have liked to make up for those two cancelled matches,” Danielson said. “I wanted to see how far Hudson could have pushed his unbeaten streak. He is a very competitive player and was upset with himself at the end. I told him that now he was something to work on for next year.”
Miller will represent the Spartans at the individual tournament at Montague High School today, Tuesday, March 3.
The MCC Chess team will only graduate one player this year and with several underclassmen will look to improve their record and have a winning season next year, Danielson said.
