Sandy Crossman

Sandra J. Crossman, 73 of Free Soil, entered into the presence of her Lord and Savior early Friday morning, June 6, 2025.

Sandy was born on January 30, 1952, in Detroit, the daughter of Edward and Esther (Houvinen) Schroderus. She graduated from Detroit Cody High School with the class of 1969. On December 4, 1970, she married Ernest Crossman in Dearborn, and they celebrated 39 wonderful years together before Ernie preceded her in death in 2010.
Ernie and Sandy shared many adventures, living in Detroit, Tampa, Florida, and eventually Free Soil, where they raised their four children, Kimberly, Kerri, Dillon, and Daniel. Wherever their journey took them, faith and love were always at the center of their marriage and family.
After her children were grown, Sandy returned to school, furthering her education first at West Shore Community College before earning her bachelor’s degree in accounting from Davenport College in 1990. Sandy built a successful career as a CPA, working for Robert Lewis in Shelby, Peter Heyse in Ludington, and Kalcher, VanderWall, and Torrey in Manistee. She later started her own office, Sandra J. Crossman, CPA, based out of her home in Free Soil. She also assisted Ernie as the bookkeeper for his appliance repair business.
Sandy was a devoted member of Cornerstone Baptist Church in Ludington, and through the years, she taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School at the churches she attended. Beyond her formal ministry, Sandy tirelessly served her community, offering rides to those in need of transportation, preparing comforting meals, and providing compassionate care to anyone who needed a helping hand. Her deep faith also led her on several mission trips with her church, ministering in Guatemala, Israel, Thailand, and Italy.
Along with her beloved husband Ernie, Sandy was also preceded in death by her parents, Edward and Esther; her brothers William and James Schroderus, and infant brother George.
Sandy will be greatly missed by her children: Kimberly (Wendy) Proffitt, Kerri (David) Wood, Dillon (Jacquie) Crossman, and Daniel (Christine) Crossman. She is also survived by her cherished grandchildren: Micah Wood, Tirzah (Dylan) VanderZwaag, Seth Wood, and Jael (Jayden) VanderZwaag; her great-grandchildren, Everett and Luka; and several nieces and nephews.
A ceremony to celebrate and remember Sandy’s life will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, June 10, 2025, at Cornerstone Baptist Church in Ludington, with Rev. Ryan White officiating. Burial will take place at Maple Grove Cemetery in Free Soil Township. Friends may meet with her family on Tuesday morning from 10 a.m. until the time of services at the church.
