Caleb Ackerman
By Rob Alway, Editor-in-Chief
LUDINGTON — The Mason County Historical recently hired Caleb Ackerman as its new museum engagement manager. In the newly created position, Ackerman will be responsible for marketing, communications, membership management, and donor engagement. He will also be responsible for management of the Port of Ludington Maritime Museum.
Ackerman is a graduate of Zeeland High School and earned bachelor’s degrees from Calvin University, majoring in history and strategic communications.
“My love for history started early,” Ackerman said. “My first-ever presentation was at age 10 on the Watergate scandal (it was supposed to be five minutes, but I took 15 – I guess I’m chatty when it comes to history! I picked the topic because of a placemat on my desk that featured all the U.S. presidents. Some presidents had one asterisk (died in office), some had two (assassinated), and Richard Nixon had three. Naturally, I had to find out why, and that curiosity snowballed into a lifelong passion for history.”
Ackerman and his wife, Ally, enjoy traveling and have visited many countries. He said he is a huge Detroit sports fan and also a fan of Formula One racing and Irish hurling.
“We are excited to have Caleb join the Mason County Historical Society’s team,” said MCHS Executive Director Rebecca Berringer. “He brings a fresh perspective to our organization and is charged with growing our identity in the community. Although we are one of the oldest organizations in Mason County and our mission is preserving history, we believe it’s important to continue to grow and to plan for the future. Caleb’s role with us will help assure that we continue to stay on that course.”
The Mason County Historical Society is a non-profit charitable organization that was founded in 1937 that does not receive any governmental funding. It owns and operates the Port of Ludington Maritime Museum in Ludington, Historic White Pine Village in Pere Marquette Township, and The Rose Hawley Archives and the Mason County Emporium and Sweet Shop in downtown Ludington.
