Deputies continue safety initiative targeting speeders, distracted drivers

August 26, 2024

MASON COUNTY — The Mason County Sheriff’s Office made 49 traffic stops, resulting in five arrests and three tickets during a traffic safety initiative on US 10 and US 31 Friday afternoon and evening, Aug. 26, according to Mason County Sheriff Kim Cole.

It was the second initiative after the sheriff’s office conducted a similar one the previous Friday, Aug. 16.

“On Friday, August 23, 2024 between the hours of 3:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m., the Mason County Sheriff’s Office conducted its second traffic safety initiative on US 10 and US 31 throughout Mason County,” states Mason County Sheriff Kim Cole in a press release. “Once again, several deputies worked a traffic detail, with a specific focus on speed, aggressive, and distracted driving.”

The five arrests included charges of: carrying a concealed weapon — handgun and possession of methamphetamine; operating while intoxicated; driving while license suspended; driving while license revoked; and a warrant arrest along with a charge open intoxicants. The three citations included two tickets for speeding and one for no insurance.

“For the second straight week, Mason County deputies worked to educate the public on safe driving and the important role traffic safety plays in a healthy Mason County. As you can see by the numbers, deputies focus on educating motorists without hitting them where it hurts — in their wallets. That said, we will not tolerate drinking and driving, and there is no place in society for driving around with meth and a loaded gun. I again, applaud the men and women of the MCSO for their dedication to keeping Mason County safe.”
