LUDINGTON — The Mason County Historical Society will host a Maritime Heritage Day on Saturday, Aug. 3 at the Port of Ludington Maritime Museum, 217 S. Lakeshore Dr.

Port of Ludington Maritime Museum

The event will include a presentation honoring the 100th anniversary of the car ferries S.S. Pere Marquette 21 and S.S. Pere Marquette 22, maritime heritage walking tour, maritime-themed music and museum admission discounts.

The day will begin at 11 a.m. with a guided walking tour of Ludington’s Maritime Heritage Trail. The cost of the walking tour is $25 per person, which includes museum admission.

At 2 p.m., car ferry historian Art Chavez will give a presentation on the history of the S.S. Pere Marquette 21 and S.S. Pere Marquette 22, two vessels that inspired a generation of car ferries and shaped maritime history.

Chavez has been researching the history of Lake Michigan’s railroad car ferries for over 30 years and has interviewed crews, written dozens of articles, and has produced four pictorial histories on the topic.

From 4 to 7 p.m., musician Lee Murdock will perform. Murdock is a renowned musician who specializes in traditional and contemporary songs inspired by the Great Lakes.

Museum admission that day (not including the walking tour) is $15 per adult, $13 for seniors ages 60 and over and $11 for children ages 4 to 13. Children under age 3 are free.

The Mason County Historical Society is a non-profit charitable organization that was founded in 1937. While at one time the Society was supported by a local tax millage, it has operated autonomously, without taxpayer support, for over 30 years. Its mission is to preserve and present Mason County’s rich history, inspiring visitors to appreciate and engage with their heritage. The Society owns and operates Historic White Pine Village in Pere Marquette Township, the Port of Ludington Maritime Museum in Ludington and the Mason County Research Center in downtown Ludington.
