Planting day is May 18

LUDINGTON — The Ludington Petunia Parade is looking for volunteers to help with the planting and maintenance of the project’s 32,000 flowers that line Ludington Avenue, along with portions of Loomis and Ferry streets. Volunteers can help on planting day, Saturday, May 18, or anytime throughout the summer.  The Petunia Parade is also seeking three volunteers to be block captains.

“We have 40 blocks of flowers to plant and maintain,” said Petunia Parade board member Mary Lou Ohnsman. “We really could use three people who will take charge of a block, but we are certainly looking for anyone who can help in anyway with the project.”

Potential volunteers are encouraged to attend a meet-and-greet event at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 11 or at 7 p.m. on Monday, May 13 at the Ludington Municipal Building Community Room, 400 S. Harrison St. Volunteers can also contact Cathy Webster at 231-794-9023 or Ohnsman at 616-866-0374.

The Ludington Petunia Parade was started in 1987 by Ellery and Sue Sabin. It is a non-profit organization that is funded by private donations.

“Volunteers can be individuals or can be people representing businesses, churches, organizations, or any other type of community group,” Ohnsman said. “In the last 37 years we have now had multiple generations participate in planting and maintaining the petunias. It can be a lot of fun and very rewarding once you see the two and a half miles of beautiful flowers in blossom up and down Ludington Avenue and the other streets.”

Volunteers who want to help on planting day can make arrangements ahead of time or can show up at Rotary Park on Saturday, May 18 between 8 to 10 a.m.
