LUDINGTON — Mason County Prosecuting Attorney Lauren Kreinbrink has announced that she will be resigning from the position effective June 1, 2024. Kreinbrink stated, in a press release, that she has accepted a partnership in the trial law firm of Craig W. Elhart in Traverse City.

“Until June 1st, I will continue to do everything in my power to ensure that justice is done within our community, and to ensure that there is a smooth transition in place for my appointed successor, my staff, and our local law enforcement agencies, and fellow county officials,” Kreinbrink stated.

Michigan law states that the judge or judges of the circuit court is/are responsible for appointing a replacement in the case of the resignation of the prosecutor. The replacement would be made until the end of the current term, which expires on Dec. 31, 2024.

Kreinbrink was elected to the four-year term November 2020, replacing Paul Spaniola, who had retired. She has served as prosecutor since Jan. 1, 2021. She did not file petitions to seek re-election this year and had announced to county employees earlier this year that she was not seeking re-election. Three others have filed, all seeking the Republican nomination for candidacy during the August primary election. They include Jordan Miller, Manistee County chief assistant prosecuting attorney, Becky Lederer, private practice attorney, and Beth Hand, Mason County chief assistant prosecuting attorney. No Democrats have petitioned to seek the nomination.

“I also want to take this opportunity to thank all of my family, friends, co-workers, and community members who supported me throughout my campaign for Mason County Prosecuting Attorney in the challenging year of 2020,” Kreinbrink said. “Without your encouragement, none of this would be possible. To all of the law enforcement agencies and citizens of Mason County, it has truly been an honor to serve as your prosecutor since January 1, 2021. No matter where I go or practice law in the future, I will forever be proud to call Mason County my home.”
