Teacher Amy Cronk scoops out salad to her science students.

SCOTTVILLE — Seventh grade science students at Mason County Central Middle School have been studying photosynthesis and cellular respiration. Last week they ate their science projects.

Teacher Amy Cronk said the students began growing various lettuces since the beginning of March using a hydroponic plant tower. On Friday, Cronk treated each of her science classes to a salad with mixed greens from the tower, along with other toppings. “The students learn what it takes to grow a plant, light and water, and also they learn how plants convert carbon dioxide into oxygen.”

They also learn about food.

“Not only are they learning about science, but they are also learning about nutrition,” Cronk said. “For some of these students, it’s the first time they have tried some of the topics or dressings on the salads.”
