VICTORY TOWNSHIP — The West Shore Community College Humankind Series is hosting a screening of Janelle Vaughn Dowell’s short film “Elsewhere”, a digital collage celebrating the benefits of vacation, rejuvenation, nature, transportation, and abstract art. The 12-minute film will be screened from 11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, April 24, through Friday, April 26, in the first-floor commons area of the Schoenherr Campus Center on WSCC’s main campus. On Thursday, April 25, Dowell will present her work from noon to 1 p.m. in the same location. The screenings and presentations are free and open to all.

Drawing inspiration from Eddie Glaude Jr.’s thought-provoking book “Begin Again”, the film provides a space for embracing stillness and discovering the power of simply being. Dowell skillfully weaves a rich tapestry of photos from the Chicago Film Archive collections and an original music composition by Sen Morimoto to offer viewers an opportunity for self-reflection, discovery, and solace.

Dowell is a multifaceted artist, educator, and visionary filmmaker known for her compelling work that blends the realms of documentary storytelling and academia. As an adjunct professor at the City Colleges of Chicago, she imparts her thirst for knowledge and passion for media communications to the next generation of communicators and storytellers.

“Janelle’s work touches on an important topic for our area’s economy, vacationing,” WSCC’s Curator Eden Ünlüata-Foley said. “Idlewild’s importance to African American history has brought many scholars and artists to our area in pursuit of understanding, documenting, and reflecting on Idlewild. Janelle has a deep familiarity with our area and has closely studied the important contributions the African American community has made. We are delighted to have her back to present one of her newer works.”

This exhibition is presented as part of West Shore Community College’s Humankind series. This year’s theme of the series is Inclusion: Conversations Around A Crowded Table.  More information on the series can be found at westshore.edu.
