Fire departments busy with brush fires

By Rob Alway, Editor-in-Chief

Brush fires fanned by strong winds kept several fire departments busy Tuesday afternoon in Eden and Hamlin townships.

At 3:29 p.m., Custer Fire Department was called to what was described as a one acre fire in the 3800 block of South Tuttle Road near Kinney Road, in Eden Township. As the fire spread, due to 20 mph-plus winds, assistance was called in from Riverton Fire Department and Scottville Fire Department. As those fire units were clearing the scene, Hamlin Township Fire Department was called to a fire, at 6:10 p.m., in the 5900 block of Ehler Road, west of Jebavy Drive.  The Ehler Road fire was dispatched as a 20-plus acre fire with structures in its path.

With winds blowing east-southeast and gusts up to 40 mph the fire quickly spread. Assistance was called in from Ludington Fire Department, Pere Marquette Township Fire Department, Grant Township Fire Department, Fountain Area Fire Department, Riverton Fire Department and the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. Also assisting on scene were Michigan State Police, Mason County Sheriff’s Office, and Fountain Fire Department Auxiliary.

Firefighters were able to protect the larger structures in the path of the fire. As of posting time, 8:25 p.m. firefighters were still on scene.
