WSCC program to discuss LGBTQ topics

LUDINGTON — West Shore Community College’s Humankind series is pleased to host an author-led discussion of the book “Private Love, Public School: Gay Teacher Under Fire” by Christine Yared, on Monday, Feb. 26 at 7 p.m. at the Ludington branch of the Mason County District Library, 217 E. Ludington Ave. Yared’s talk is entitled, “LGBTQ+ Life: Outrageous Acts and Everyday Rebellions.” It is a free event and everyone is welcome.

This event is a part of Humankind’s theme of the year, “Inclusion: Conversations Around a Crowded Table,” focused on building empathy towards those different from us in order to help everyone feel like they belong and have a seat at the table.

A Michigan Notable Book for 2022, it focuses on the discriminatory treatment of Byron Center Public Schools music teacher Gerry Crane. Crane resigned from his job in 1995, after months of harassment and complaints because he was an out, gay man. Crane died following a heart attack at the age of 32, just six months after resigning.

Yared is a lawyer and educator, with over three decades of experience practicing law. She has been a tireless advocate for LGBTQ+ people, and has frequently been invited to speak to various institutions on issues of LGBTQ rights and other social justice topics.

“This is an important event for anyone with an interest in human rights, particularly those of LGBTQ+ people,” said Dr. John Moore, WSCC associate professor of psychology. “While much progress has been made, LGBTQ+ people still face a great deal of discrimination in the workplace, and this can be particularly true in educational settings. We are honored to welcome Christine Yared to share her knowledge and experience on these issues with us.”
