Book Mark to offer free reading tutoring for K-3 students

By Rob Alway, Editor-in-Chief

Bob and Carole Kosanovich, owners of The Book Mark, 201 S. Rath Ave., are launching a free tutoring program to help lower elementary-aged children improve their reading skills. Beginning this fall, The Book Mark will offer On Track Reader Tutoring Program for children who are in kindergarten through third grade.

“In Michigan, children are required to meet a certain reading level by third grade,” said Bob Kosanovich. “Carole and I talked about what we could do to help local kids achieve that level and, with the help of our daughter, we developed this program.”

Bob and Carole are retired college professors. Both taught at Ferris State University. Their daughter, Marcia Kosanovich, is a reading educator at Florida State University, with 28 years of experience in teaching, creating and delivering professional development.

Bob said they are using a program that Marcia has developed.

The free program will include volunteer tutors who will meet with students after school and cover foundational reading skills. Quick assessments in foundational reading skills will be administered to each student and lessons will focus on students’ instructional needs. Students will be tutored in small groups. The 30-45 minute lessons will also include a snack!

Bob he has been working with officials from Ludington Area School District to launch the program. The district has agreed to provide transportation from school for participating students.

“We are launching the program with an emphasis on students from Ludington, but our goal is to expand this to any student in the area,” Bob said. “However, we will not turn anyone down.”

Those wishing to becoming a volunteer tutor are asked to take a three hour training session, with the choice of Friday, Sept. 29 or Saturday, Sept. 30, from 9 a.m. to noon. Coffee, pastries and lunch will be provided.
