FREE SOIL TOWNSHIP — A memorial service Saturday marked the 10th anniversary of Michigan State Police Trooper Paul Butterfield’s death. On Sept. 9, 2013, Butterfield was patrolling North Custer Road when he pulled over a pickup truck. The driver of that truck, a 19-year-old Irons man, shot and killed 42-year-old Butterfield.

Each year since, a service is held at the site of the shooting, between Townline and Freeman roads. A roadside monument pays tribute to Butterfield, who was a resident of Grant Township and a U.S. Army veteran.

Mason County Sheriff Marine Patrol Deputy Dale Goodrich watches the ceremony. Goodrich is a retired MSP trooper and was Butterfield’s partner.
