CUSTER TOWNSHIP — West Michigan is one of the largest asparagus growing regions in the country. The perennial crop is picked during its early phases in the spring and continues to grow the remainder of the year after it is no longer edible by humans. However, the bugs love to keep eating it. The post-harvest asparagus plant looks like a fern, but it is actually a member of the asparagaceae family (it was once considered to be part of the liliaceae (lily) family. Over Labor Day weekend Levi Schwass of Springdale Farms, based in Riverton Township, sprayed insecticide on one of the farm’s fields near the intersection of Scottville and Wilson roads in Custer Township as the field enters its late summer state, a necessary action in order to protect the crop. In the fall the asparagus plants will turn brown and typically will be cut down before winter.
