Pier to Pier Picnics offers sandwiches, wraps and smoothies on the go.

LUDINGTON — Pier to Pier Picnics opened earlier this month, offering speciality sandwiches and wraps, healthy sides, smoothies, and crepes, along with fat tire bike and paddle board rentals. It is located on the north side of Loomis Street just east of James Street, in the back of 127 S. James St. 

The business is owned by Sarah and Matt Kanitz and Chase Rohrer. Sarah Kanitz, who also owns Lake Michigan CPA Services, at 317 S. James St., said she found herself always struggling to find a food establishment in town where she could grab a quick sandwich to go during tax season. 

“I always had to leave downtown to grab a sandwich,” Kanitz said. “I wanted something that was quick and easy. I also found that there was lack of places where someone could get a smoothie.” 

Pier to Pier Picnics is a take-out establishment with limited seating. It is currently open Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Its menu items pay tribute to Mason County place names and activities. Some of the smoothies include the Beach Stroll, Fat Tire, Kite Surf, Dune Climb, Forest Hike and Sunset. Sandwiches include the Victory, Summit, Riverton, Free Soil, etc. 

“Naturally, we have a tourist economy here in Mason County,” Chase said. “But, we also wanted a place that will bring the locals in. The names are a way to create a point of pride for this beautiful place where we live.” 

Sarah said she wants to promote a healthy lifestyle. 

“The smoothies are all made with whole fruits and no preservatives,” she said. “We also want this to be a place that promotes being active, which is why we are offering rentals of fat tire bikes and paddle boards. In the winter we will have snowshoe rentals.” 

Currently, orders can be placed by phone or in person. Chase said they hope to have an online ordering system in place soon.
