Passengers safe after boat takes on water

LAKE MICHIGAN — Three people were unharmed after the 31-foot boat they were riding began taking on water Wednesday evening near Big Point Sable. According to Mason County Sheriff Kim Cole, emergency personnel were alerted of the situation at 10:19 p.m. First responders were dispatched to the Ludington State Park, including Mason County Sheriff’s Office road patrol and marine patrol, Hamlin Township Fire Department, Ludington Police/Fire Harbor One fire/rescue boat, Michigan Department of Natural Resources, and Life EMS.

According to dispatch information, at the time of the call, U.S. Coast Guard personnel, likely from Station Manistee, estimated a 40 minute response time. Coast Guard Station Ludington is currently not manned.

Cole said the DNR assisted getting the boat to the mouth of the Big Sable River. He said the reason it was taking on water is unknown at this time but the incident is under investigation.
