2 Ludington firefighters sent to hospital during apartment building fire

LUDINGTON — Two Ludington firefighters were sent to the hospital during an apartment building fire Tuesday morning, July 11, at 1218 S. Madison St., according to a press release issued by Ludington City Manager Mitch Foster.

“During the incident, one LFD firefighter suffered a medical issue and was transported by Life EMS to Corewell Health Ludington Hospital for treatment. A short time later, a second LFD firefighter was injured and was transported by Life EMS to Corewell Health Ludington Hospital for treatment. Both firefighters are in stable condition.”

Firefighters were dispatched to the scene approximately 8:20 a.m. for a “multiple-dwelling apartment building with visible smoke and flames coming from the east side — first and second floor. LFD was able to confirm no occupants were inside the building. LFD began to attack the fire with the first arriving engine and aerial truck. During the initial stages of the response, LFD Incident Command requested assistance from Pere Marquette Charter Township Fire and Hamlin Township Fire. Consumers Power and DTE also responded to shut off the electricity and gas.

“LFD Incident Command reported the fire under control at approximately 10:25 a.m., and extinguished at approximately 11 a.m. The preliminary cause and origin of the fire is still under investigation. A Michigan State Police fire investigator is responding to the scene to assist with the investigation.”

South Madison Street between Third and Fourth streets will remain closed for several hours in the vicinity of the fire scene.

Ludington Fire Department was assisted by Ludington Police Department, Pere Marquette Charter Township Fire Department, Hamlin Township Fire Department, Life EMS, Consumers Power, DTE, City of Ludington Building Inspector, City of Ludington DPW, and the Michigan State Police fire investigators.
