Scooter driver dies following crash with SUV

LUDINGTON — A 35-year-old Ludington man driving a motorized scooter died as a result of a crash today. Emergency personnel were dispatched to the intersection of Bryant Road and Harrison Street at 4:33 p.m.

According to Ludington Police Department Chief Chris Jones, emergency personnel began providing care to the victim who was then transported by ambulance to Corewell Health Ludington Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

Jones said the preliminary investigation indicated the 35-year-old male victim was traveling east on Bryant Road, approaching the intersection of Harrison Street. At the same time a 2020 Chevrolet Traverse SUV, operated by an 80-year-old Ludington man, initiated a left turn from westbound Bryant Road on to southbound Harrison Street, resulting in a collision with the motorized scooter. The driver of the Traverse was not injured as a result of the collision.

An investigation by the Ludington Police Department is still underway, assisted by the Accident Reconstruction Team of the Mason County Sheriff’s Office. Anyone with information about the collision is asked to contact Sgt. Mike Haveman by email haveman211@ci.ludington.mi.us, or by telephone at (231) 843-3425.
