78-year-old passenger in crash dies from injuries

EDEN TOWNSHIP — The 78-year-old passenger in a two-vehicle crash Friday afternoon, June 23, at the intersection of Custer and Hawley roads has died as a result of her injuries, according to Mason County Sheriff Kim Cole.

“The investigation showed a 2014 Ford Edge, driven by Judith Franklin, 78, of Chase, Michigan, was eastbound on Hawley Road when it failed to stop at the Custer Road stop sign and drove into the path of a southbound 2014 GMC pickup truck driven by a 26-year-old Custer female.  The GMC pickup struck the Ford Edge in the driver’s side door.

“Judith Franklin and her passenger, Susan McKinney, 78 from Idlewild, Michigan, were both injured and transported to Corewell Hospital for injuries sustained in the crash. The other driver was not injured,” said Sheriff Cole.

“On June 27, 2023, Mason County Sheriff’s Office deputies were notified by the Kent County Medical Examiner’s Office that Mrs. McKinney passed away from injuries sustained in the crash.

“Neither speed nor intoxicants appear to have been contributing factors in the crash, which does remain under investigation by the MCSO Crash Reconstruction Team.”
