Drunk driving suspect kicks, head butts officer

HAMLIN TOWNSHIP — A 19-year-old Ludington man was arrested by a Michigan State Police trooper from the Hart post Saturday, June 10, shortly after 10:30 p.m. following a vehicle crash on Lakeshore Drive near Jagger Road, according to MSP Sgt. Craig Willea.

The suspect assaulted a 25-year-old Ludington police officer during his arrest on Atkinson Drive, said Cpt. Steve Wietrzykowski. “The LPD officer was helping a Michigan State Police trooper arrest the 19-year-old for driving while intoxicated. The LPD officer was kicked and head butted by the 19-year-old during the arrest.” The officer was not injured.

The man faces charges of operating with a high blood alcohol content/super drunk driving, failure to report an accident, assaulting/resisting/obstructing police and a civil infraction of minor in possession of alcohol, said Sgt Willea. 

He was lodged in the Mason County Jail.

  • 8:20 p.m., (MCSO), car/deer crash, no injury, Free Soil Road west of Reid Road, Meade Township.

Saturday, June 10, 2023:

  • 5:20 a.m., (MCSO), car/deer crash, no injury, US 31 south of Free Soil Road, Free Soil Township.
  • 12:20 p.m., (MCSO), two-vehicle crash, no injury, Birch Street south of Beech Street, Hamlin Township.
  • 1:50 p.m., (MCSO), car/deer crash, no injury, US 31 freeway north of the Pere Marquette Highway overpass, Pere Marquette Township.
  • 4:45 p.m., (MSP), a 57-year-old Lake City, Michigan man was cited for driving while license suspended, US 10 near Taylor Road, Branch Township.

Sunday, June 11, 2023:

  • 1:06 a.m., (LPD), a 23-year-old Ludington man was arrested for disorderly person/public intoxication, 100 block of East Foster Street, City of Ludington. He was lodged in the Mason County Jail.
  • 2:14 a.m., (MSP), a 30-year-old Ludington man was cited for operating without insurance, South Pere Marquette Highway near West US 10, Pere Marquette Township. A felony charge of methamphetamine possession is pending lab analysis of the substance.
  • 2:57 a.m., (LPD), a 51-year-old Ludington woman was arrested on an outstanding warrant issued in Muskegon County for larceny in a building, 900 block of East Ludington Avenue, City of Ludington. She was lodged in the Mason County Jail.
  • 10:30 a.m., (MCSO), one-vehicle crash, no injury, Victory Corners Road north of Decker Road, Victory Township.
  • 2:32 p.m., (MCSO), one-vehicle crash, no injury, Masten Road north of Washington Road, Logan Township.
