Horticulture meeting set for March 16

WEARE TOWNSHIP, Oceana County – Michigan State University Extension has scheduled this year’s spring horticulture meeting for Thursday, March 16, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the West Michigan Research Station located at 5185 N. Oceana Dr.

Registration begins at 8:30 a.m., and lunch will be provided. The event is sponsored in conjunction with West Central Michigan Horticulture Research, Inc. 

Early registration for $25 is due by Monday, March 6. To register, visit West Central Spring Horticulture Meeting 2023; call the Oceana County MSU Extension office at 231-873-2129; or stop by the office at 844 South Griswold St., Hart.

MSU researchers and industry representatives will update growers on the latest challenges and opportunities in tree fruit production. 

Speakers will discuss various topics such as nutrient management; fruit bud development; Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategies for pests such as spotted wing drosophila, scale, and nematodes; and management updates for cherry leaf spot, fire blight, and bitter pit. Apple storage considerations to prevent post-harvest disorders will also be discussed and the use of 1-MCP (methylcyclopropene) to maintain fruit quality and aroma. 

Three Michigan pesticide recertification credits in the categories private core, commercial core or 1C and Certified Crop Advisors’ Continuing Education Units have been requested.
