Fire destroys Walhalla house

WALHALLA — Multiple fire departments responded to a house fire at 6654 E. US 10 Tuesday afternoon. Emergency personnel were initially dispatched at 12:46 p.m. for the fire between Walhalla and Wever roads.

Though everyone was able to get out of the house, a 30-year-old male sustained burns while attempting to enter the building. After being checked out by ambulance personnel, he refused medical treatment.

The property is listed as being owned by David Verschueren at that address.

The fire destroyed the house along with a car and pickup truck, which were parked in front of the house.

Emergency units responding included Branch Fire Department, Custer Fire Department, Fountain Area Fire Department, Scottville Fire Department, Riverton Fire Department, Michigan State Police, Mason County Sheriff’s Office, and Life EMS. Personnel from Mason County Road Commission, Fountain Fire Department Auxiliary and Great Lakes Energy were also on scene.

As of 1:30 p.m., US 10 is closed between Walhalla and Wever roads with traffic being diverted to First Street.
