Sheriff issues warning about financial accounts

LUDINGTON — Mason County Sheriff Kim Cole is warning the public to keep an eye on their financial accounts. “With the recent uptick in fraud and ID theft type cases, it is important to remember to keep a close eye on your bank and credit card statements,” Cole said in a statement Monday morning. 

The sheriff also is encouraging the public to utilize services that keep track of credit scores. 

“With tax season upon us, scammers and fraudsters will be in overdrive attempting to take your hard-earned money by whatever means possible, including posing as you to steal your tax returns,” Cole said. “If you have suspicious activity on any of your accounts, immediately notify your bank or credit card company and report it.  If your Social Security number happens to get compromised notify your local Social Security Administration Office right away.”
