SCOTTVILLE — Mason County Central High School has revitalized its quiz bowl team after several years in hiatus. The team has been practicing since late November in preparation for the upcoming competition season in the Rivers Division of the newly restructured West Michigan Conference.

Coach Becky Gerhart said the program comprises of 15 students divided into one varsity team and two junior varsity teams.

“I’m really excited about the potential of our teams,” Gerhart said. “It’s been several years since MCC has had a quiz bowl team. We’ve got a great group of students who each bring a diverse range of knowledge.”

Quiz bowl is a game in which two teams of four players each compete head-to-head to answer questions from all areas of knowledge, including history, literature, science, fine arts, current events, popular culture, sports, and more.

Quiz bowl first debuted in Mason County in 1988. At that time, a local tournament was hosted at West Shore Community College with all county high schools participating.

The teams include Sara Abbot, Clara Baur, Holly Bowen, Elizabeth Britting, Brooklyn Carroll, Adriana Donahue, Miranda Heidorf, Emma Jancek, Asher Johnson, Cullen Kraus-McCarthy, Melody Lewis, Alyssa Raspotnik, Charlotte Rosenow, Zachary Visser and Elizabeth Wheaton.

“Quiz bowl is a fun way to learn a variety of topics,” Gerhart said. “It’s great to be able to offer this opportunity to the students again.”

Competition takes place on Wednesdays. The schedule is as follows:

  • Jan. 18, Fremont High School
  • Jan. 25, Fremont High School
  • Feb. 8, Manistee High School
  • Feb. 15, Ludington High School
  • March 2, Ludington High School (tournament)

The team is currently holding a Pampered Chef fundraiser to pay for team shirts with a goal to raise $1,500. People wishing to make a purchase can order through this link. Check donations may also be sent to MCC Schools, 300 W. Broadway Ave., Scottville, MI 49454. Mark “Quiz Bowl” in the memo.
