MCC board likely to consider bond request in December

By Rob Alway, Editor-in-Chief

SCOTTVILLE — Mason County Central School District’s Board of Education is expected to make a decision about pursuing another bond request when it meets Monday, December 19. During the board’s regular meeting tonight, Nov. 21, Superintendent Jeff Mount said each district building is currently reaching out to parents to seek feedback about a potential bond.

In May 2022, voters turned down a $33 million request. However, out of 700 parents who are eligible to vote in the school district only 124 voted. Mount said the voter turnout of the parents is a major concern and will be the focus of any future bond request campaigns.

“We are getting good information,” Mount told the board. “By Dec. 8 we will have a really good idea of what our community is willing to support. The important thing is our parents. That’s our target audience in this one. Not enough of them showed up in May.”

Mount said the board would have to take action in January in order for the bond proposal to be on the May school election ballot.

Board President Jim Schulte said he is concerned that a plan isn’t generated in time.

“We have talked amongst the board and every day of every week these things get older and older,” Schulte said. “If all of a sudden we don’t come up with a plan and we don’t do something on May 3, then we better get our heads together to take care of those immediate needs.” Schulte was referring to the condition of some of the district’s buildings and other infrastructure. Areas of the high school, for example, have not been updated since the building opened in 1959.
