Four charged with illegal gambling at Eagles club

LUDINGTON — Four people have been charged with illegal gambling related to incidents that allegedly took place at the Fraternal Order of the Eagles, 108 S. Harrison St. According to Ludington Police Department Interim Chief Steve Wietrzykowski, on May 3, 2022, LPD was approached by two complainants with information that extensive illegal gambling was taking place at the Eagles building.

“The investigation involved the interviewing of several witnesses and suspects,” Wietrzykowski said. The State of Michigan Liquor Control Commission and the Internal Revenue Service were notified of the situation, however the case was mostly handled by LPD, Wietrzykowski said.

“It is unknown if the IRS or LCC are going to follow up with any measures,” Wietrzykowski said.

As a result of the investigation, four people were each charged and recently arraigned in 79th District Court for gambling, gambling house permitting for gain and gambling house maintaining for gain. They included: 

Johnson

George Alan Carl, 64 of Ludington, Thomas Lee Johnson, 61, of Scottville, Gary Lee Mallion, 72, of Ludington, and Suann Marie Mortensen, 52, of Ludington. Each were arraigned on Monday, Nov. 14. Bail was set for each at $5,000 personal recognizance. 

Mortensen is scheduled for a probable cause hearing on Nov. 23; Mallion and Johnson are scheduled for Nov. 30 and Karl is scheduled for Dec. 7.
