FREE SOIL TOWNSHIP — A small group of people gathered Friday evening on Custer Road, just north of Townline Road to remember Michigan State Police Trooper Paul Butterfield, who was murdered at that location on Sept. 9, 2013. Butterfield was only the second police officer to be shot and killed in the line of duty in Mason County. The other was Ludington police officer Arlo Slagle on July 28, 1958 (read story here).

The ceremony, organized by Fountain Area Fire Department firefighter Shirley Chancellor, has been held on Sept. 9 annually since the shooting. The event included an honor guard of local veterans (Butterfield was an Army veteran) along with law enforcement officers from Michigan State Police, Mason County Sheriff’s Office, Manistee County Sheriff’s Office, Manistee Police Department, Ludington Police Department, and Scottville Police Department.
