Local woman dies in Amber Township crash.

By Rob Alway, Editor-in-Chief.

AMBER TOWNSHIP — A 36-year-old Mason County woman died Sunday afternoon, Sept. 11, 2022, following a two vehicle crash at the intersection of US 31 and Johnson Road (along the Scottville bypass). The crash is the second traffic fatality in Mason County over the weekend. The first was on Friday and involved a motorcyclist from Rothbury who struck a deer and a car (see story here). An additional four people were injured as a result of the crash that occurred just before 11:40 a.m.

According to Mason County Sheriff Kim Cole, a  preliminary investigation showed a blue Ford Escape was southbound on US-31 at Johnson Road when a silver Chrysler Town & Country minivan, traveling eastbound on Johnson Road, failed to stop for the stop sign.  The minivan entered the intersection and was struck broadside in the driver side, pinning the driver in the van.

The driver of the minivan was pronounced dead at the scene.  A 19 year-old female passenger in the minivan (also from Mason County) received injuries, as did all three occupants in the southbound Ford.  The driver of the Ford and his two passengers are from Wisconsin.

The injured were all transported to Spectrum Health Ludington Hospital by Life EMS and their injuries range from moderate to serious, Cole said.

US 31 between US 10 and North Scottville Road was closed during the investigation and opened again about 3 p.m.

Emergency units responding included Mason County Sheriff’s Office, Michigan State Police, Scottville Fire Department, Custer Fire Department, Ludington Fire Department, and Life EMS. Mason County Victim Services Unit responded to the hospital to counsel family members of the victims.

The crash remains under investigation by the Mason County Sheriff’s Office Crash Reconstruction Team.

The names of those involved have not been released yet pending notification of family members.
