Resident safely escapes home as burglar breaks in.

Anyone who was traveling on US 31 between Scottville and Manistee Wednesday afternoon, July 13, who witnessed a shirtless man in the area shooting a gun at passing cars or has damage to their vehicle consistent with a gunshot, should contact the Mason County Sheriff’s Office.

SHERMAN TOWNSHIP — A male resident fled from his home when a man — who was armed with a long gun at one point — broke into his house Wednesday afternoon, July 13, on North US 31. The resident escaped unharmed, said Mason County Sheriff Kim Cole, and the suspect was arrested.

In a bizarre series of events, several 911 calls were placed around the same time frame reporting a shirtless male in the area shooting a gun at passing cars on US 31, said Sheriff Cole.

“On Wednesday, July 13, 2022 at 12:50 p.m., Mason County Sheriff’s Office deputies were called to the 3700 block of North US 31 in Mason County’s Sherman Township regarding a reported home invasion,” states Cole in a press release. “The caller was in the home when he discovered a person had reportedly broken into the house.

“While deputies were responding to the call, several other calls came into the Mason/Oceana County 911 Center reporting a shirtless male in the 3700 block of North US 31 shooting a gun at passing cars. It was further reported to responding units that this suspect had re-entered the home of the original home invasion, armed with a long gun.

“The resident of the home fled to a nearby home and as deputies were arriving, and the suspect reportedly exited the home, verbally addressing and yelling at the deputy. The suspect was not armed at that time and was taken into custody.
A shotgun was recovered along with spent casings.

“A 28 year-old Mason County man was taken into custody and is currently lodged in the Mason County Jail on home invasion charges. The Michigan State Police and Michigan DNR — Law Enforcement Division also responded to the scene and assisted responding deputies.”

No one was injured in the incident.

“The Mason County Sheriff’s Office is asking anyone who may have been traveling on US 31 between Scottville and Manistee who may have witnessed this event or has damage to their vehicle consistent with a gunshot, contact Chief Deputy Oscar Davila at (231) 843-3475 extension #130 or the Mason/Oceana County 911 Center.”
