HAMLIN TOWNSHIP — The Great Start Collaborative for the West Shore Educational Service District partnered with the Friends of the Ludington State Park on Saturday, February 26, 2022 for a lantern-lit book walk. Families enjoyed reading The Mitten by Jan Brett while they hiked a Ludington State Park trail. The Great Start Collaborative supplied flashlights for children at the start of the walk to help light the way. Members of Friends of the Ludington State Park warmed up the hikers with hot chocolate and marshmallows to roast on a bonfire. At the end of the walk, the Great Start Collaborative gave The Mitten to each family to read again at home. An actual mitten was also provided to recreate the story.

The Great Start Collaborative has committed to three book walks in Mason, Lake, and Oceana counties aimed at children eight and younger. These family activities promote literacy and provide information on how families can encourage literacy at home.
