LUDINGTON — The Scottville Clown Band donated $2,000 to Ludington Area Schools today for the purchase of new high school band uniforms. The cost for 100 uniforms is over $40,000 with all funds raised through donations, director Keith Kuczynski said. The last time new uniforms were purchased was 1993.

The Scottville Clown Band Founders’ Grant is typically an annual contribution with the goal of supporting local music education. The funds are given in the memory of the members who re-formed the organization in 1947 (the Clown Band’s roots go back to the late 1800s). In 2019, it donated funds to Mason County Central for the purchase of new music stands. Funds were not distributed in 2020 or 2021. The band also provides scholarships to middle school and high school students who attend summer music education programs such as Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp and Interlochen Center for the Arts.

“It is one of the primary missions of the Scottville Clown Band to support performing arts education for children, particularly in Mason, Lake, Oceana and Manistee counties,” Clown Band Treasurer Rob Alway said. “Many Clown Band members, going back to the 1920s and 1930s, came out of music programs at Ludington High School. That tradition continues today as we had three student members of the band, seniors Tiler Marrison and Madeline Cooper, along with sophomore Mason Marrison, present the check to Mr. Kuczynski on behalf of the band.”

The Marrison brothers are the third generation of their family to be members of the Clown Band.

Kuczynski said the Clown Band’s donation brings the fundraising to-date up to $17,000. Anyone wishing to contribute may click on the QR code located in this article.
