LHS drama club to present “Gifted”.

Oriole News is a presentation of Ludington Area School District in partnership with Mason County Press.

LUDINGTON — Ludington High School drama club will present “Gifted” on Thursday, Nov. 18 through Saturday, Nov. 20 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, Nov. 21 at 2 p.m. at L.F. Peterson Auditorium. Tickets are available at the door: students and seniors, $3 and general admission, $5.

Under the direction of Chris Plummer,  “Gifted” is a story about Mrs. Jenks, who revisits her high-school alma mater as a substitute teacher for a class of highly gifted students. Discovering the passage of time hasn’t erased her own painful experiences as a bully, she now faces a class of kids whose lives and experiences all too closely resemble those of the very students she taunted. She must face hers feelings while helping the students understand the senselessness of bullying, and she will deliver news to the students that will force them to see life in a whole new way. Gifted moves at a fast clip, revealing the day-to-day drama and humor these kids live. It’s a story of love, respect, devotion, extreme forgiveness and embracing one’s own gift.

“This is a funny yet moving look into the lives of a group of students that daily battle their struggle with being different and wanting to be accepted for who they are,” Plummer said. “They find refuge in their ‘Gifted’ class, their ‘safe place.’ Each student deals with being different, special, unique in their own way.  The story broadens to include the substitute teacher who we discover is intimately connected to the current situation and subsequently helps these students deal with being bullied.”

Plummer said holding a play on the edges of the pandemic has been a challenge.

“I struggled with finding a play to perform once we were able to do live theatre again,” she said. “Not knowing what things would look like, masking, distancing, etc., I decided it would be best to choose a small show with fewer characters and little to no set and technical requirements.  I also wanted to find something that had a positive message accessible to junior high and high school students.”
