VICTORY TOWNSHIP — West Shore Community College’s newest professor of biology, Dr. Eric McLearon, offers a unique perspective to his students. McLearon is a medical doctor (MD) who has extensive experience as an emergency room physician. He currently teachers anatomy and physiology and will also teach microbiology winter semester.

“I have lived and practiced anatomy and physiology in the emergency room. I feel like I am uniquely qualified to teach this subject,” he said.

McLearon most recently worked full-time in the emergency department at Munson Health Care Manistee Hospital before making the decision to apply for the position at WSCC, left vacant when Michael McKinney retired.

He said he has always enjoyed teaching.

“When you are in medical school, you begin by being taught. Then, you teach others. This continues into residency.”

His classes at WSCC allow him to teach future medical professionals. He said nearly 80 percent of his students are nursing students.

“The human body is fascinating,” he said. “A lot of people have a difficult time with a subject like math, but most people find studying the human body to be interesting.

In addition to having students who are interested in the subject, McLearon has found WSCC to be a great place to teach.

“The people here are very friendly. The administrative staff is very focused on education and offering an affordable education for the people in the college’s district. I’ve been enjoying it here and I think it will become easier once I have my curriculum fine tuned.”

McLearon received a bachelor’s degree from Michigan State University and graduated medical school from Wayne State University in 2007.
