Obituary: Marilyn Hissong (Quigley), 84, of Fountain

Marilyn Hissong (Quigley), 84, of Fountain, passed away at home on September 7, 2021.

Marilyn Jean Follett was born February 20, 1937, in Muskegon to Linda (Rahrig) and Robert Follett. She graduated from Muskegon Heights High School in 1955 and married John Robert Quigley and together they raised their six children.  Those busy years of raising a big family brought Marilyn much pride and joy while living in Vicksburg and Whitehall.  In younger years she enjoyed bowling and golfing on leagues in the Whitehall area.  She was a master at planning fun outings for her family, whether it be out on the big lake fishing, or having a winter picnic in the woods on snowmobiles – there was always a special feast included.   Her friends and family would tell you she could create a feast out of the most basic items she could muster up in the kitchen.

In 1994 she married Justus (Jim) Hissong.  Marilyn and Jim traveled extensively with their truck and camper, including Alaska and most of the national parks.  They then settled down to a quiet country life in the Scottville area.  She enjoyed landscaping their large yard and creating a home that hosted many big family gatherings with campouts, campfires and holiday parties.  Marilyn loved her flower gardens, feeding the birds and keeping the cookie jar filled.  Her grandchildren enjoyed having Grammy days, eating peanut butter cookies, reading story books, and many special beach trips and weekend getaways with Gramma.  She was the ultimate hostess for family and friends and made it look effortless.
Marilyn had many lifelong friends including, Augie, Bonnie, Maryann, Glenda, Jerry, and Glen.  She kept in touch with friends and family by writing beautiful cards and letters and never missed a birthday remembrance.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Linda (Rahrig) Follet, stepdad Don (Tauno), brother Robert Follet, sister Judy Cole and husband Jim Hissong.

She is survived by her children, Jeffrey Quigley, Patrick Quigley, Cheryl (Don) Ulsh, Diane Quigley, John Quigley, Michael (Cathy) Quigley, her sister Dona Jarvi, brother Jerry Jarvi and brother-in-law Sonny (Max) Cole.  She is also survived by six grandchildren Katie, Megan, Kyle, Morgan, Brett, Gus and Adria, seven great-grandchildren and husband Jim’s children and grandchildren.

Special thanks to Ashley and Trudy who kindly supported Marilyn’s care at home.

According to Marilyn’s wishes cremation has taken place and a graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. September 15, 2021, in the chapel at St. Mary’s Cemetery located at 1915 Park St, Muskegon.

The family invites friends to celebrate Marilyn with a luncheon starting at noon at the North Muskegon VFW Hall located at 1061 Witham Rd., Muskegon.
