VICTORY TOWNSHIP — West Shore Community College is set to start its fall semester, Monday, August 30.

Tonight, Thursday, August 26, students gathered on the lawn of the Schoenherr Campus Center for an evening filled with activities. “I am so excited to start college, and look forward to meeting all sorts of new people,” freshman, Jason Luurtsema said.

New and returning students had the opportunity to visit campus and get to know how the new school year will unfold. For instance, the math department, led by chair Wade James, is planning a new approach to the teachings of math. The students will be in the classroom, but the learning will be done by a professor via video calling through the projector. After the professor is done teaching, a “professional tutor,” otherwise known as another math professor for other classes, will be left to help the students as needed. According to math professor Kelly Glover, it’s not supposed to be a scary thing and they are “there to help.”

The community mixer also included several fun activities for people of all ages to participate in. Face painting, lawn games, photo booths, and food trucks, all appeared, to name a few. The college also offered a fun interactive bingo game where students could go booth to booth and collect stamps by talking with the schools clubs and programs. If one was to complete their bingo card, then he/she had the chance to enter and win a smart flat screen TV.

As the last few days of summer come to an end, students prepare for an exciting first day back, and look forward to the start of a new year.
