Utility pole causes damage to Optimist Building.

A utility pole fell on the roof of the Scottville Optimist Building.

SCOTTVILLE — Firefighters and police are on scene of the Scottville Optimist Club where a high intensity utility pole has fallen on the Optimist Building. The pole belongs to Consumers Energy and fell on the building about midnight, according to Scottville Police Chief Matt Murphy, who confirmed that the lines to the pole are still charged. Murphy said because the building is metal and the pole has fallen into the roof, there is no telling if the building may be charged with electricity as well. 

About 11 a.m., Scottville Fire Department and Custer Fire Department were called to the building because a passerby called 911 and reported smoke and flames were scene coming from the building. Firefighters are unable to enter the building until Consumers Energy arrives. 

Murphy said he understands that Consumers employees have been busy with several power outages throughout the region, but he said he considers this incident to be a true emergency.
