WSCC public safety programs host trainings.

VICTORY TOWNSHIP – West Shore Community College’s Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) program, in collaboration with the college’s police academy and nursing department, West Shore Educational Service District Career Technical Education’s Allied Health program, as well as the Ludington Fire Department, completed a day of emergency training scenarios on Friday, April 30, 2021.

The scenarios simulated vehicle crashes with varying levels of difficulty.  The EMT faculty created and dispatched EMT, fire, and police to the “scene” where students tested their response skills. Law enforcement students were tasked with handling impaired drivers and emotional bystanders. The “injured” people were passed to nursing students in order for EMT students to gain experience in the transfer of patients.

The college’s newly renovated ambulance, donated by Life EMS, was in full use on the scene, as well as several of the law enforcement vehicles used in police academy training.

“It is a wonderful opportunity to have this training available in our district,” said,1 Jeff Stockhill, Life EMS director of north operations.  “Not every program has a vehicle for training and it makes a big difference in the breadth of experience provided to students. Life EMS is happy to partner with the college.”

The ambulance allows the college to provide emergency vehicle driver training to students offering realistic scenario-based learning in which students practice their skills in a life-like environment.

“Conducting CPR or starting an IV can be challenging on a spacious classroom floor, but it enters a new level of difficulty when it is done from the back of a cramped ambulance. This places students in the most realistic environment possible,” said Dr. Mark Kinney, vice president of academics and student services.

“We are grateful to Life EMS and our many partners who made this donation to the college possible,” said WSCC President Scott Ward.
