Local law enforcement to increase texting/driving enforcement.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has designated April as National Distracted Driving Awareness Month. Local law enforcement agencies, including Mason County Sheriff’s Office, Ludington Police Department, Scottville Police Department, and Michigan State Police, Hart Post have partnered in the “U Drive, U text, U Pay” enforcement campaign to bring awareness to the dangers of texting and driving.

According to data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 9% of fatal crashes involved distracted drivers in 2019. Between 2012 and 2019, 26,004 people died in a crash involving a distracted driver.

Tickets can cost $100 dollars or more for the first offense. Mason County law enforcement will run this high visibility campaign from April 13 to April 17, 2021.
