RIVERTON TOWNSHIP — Fire damaged the James Dittmer residence, 3115 W. Kinney Road, Sunday, Dec. 20, 2020.

Dittmer said he had been at church, at St. Paul’s Methodist Church, less than half mile away, when he arrived home to find the house filled with thick black smoke. He said he believed the fire started from an electric heater located in a porch in the back of the house.

Dittmer, who lives in the house with his son Tom, said the house was built in 1902.

Firefighters were able to quickly extinguish the fire but there was a lot of smoke damage.

Riverton Fire Department and Pere Marquette Township Fire Department were initially dispatched at 11:03 a.m. Also assisting were Ludington Fire Department, Scottville Fire Department, and Custer Fire Department.
