SCOTTVILLE — Jacob Matthew Howe, 27, of 400 W. Third St., Apt. 409, was arrested by Scottville Police Department on Aug. 11 and charged with third degree retail fraud (shoplifting) along with prohibited use of chemical agents, both misdemeanors.

According to Police Chief Matt Murphy, the case against Howe began at 6:23 p.m. on Aug. 11 when SPD was called to Dollar General, 206 S. Main St., for a complaint of a subject shoplifting. Murphy said the suspect was identified as Glendale Apartments resident Howe, who has an extensive criminal record.

“SPD made contact with Howe, at which time he was found with the missing merchandise (Dust Off),” Murphy said. “As a result of the investigation probable cause was developed and Howe was arrested.”

Howe was arrested on June 2 by SPD and Sheriffs’, Chiefs’ Enforcement of Narcotics Team (SSCENT) and charged with felony charges of possession of methamphetamine/Ecstasy and maintaining a drug house. After paying his $250 bond (10% of $2,500 bail) he was released from jail the following day. The case has been bound over to circuit court.

On July 31, 2018, Howe was found guilty in 79th District Court of controlled substance use and was sentenced to 21 days in jail. At that time, he lived in the 2900 block of West Conrad Road in Amber Township. (See related story here.)

One count of delivery/manufacture narcotic/cocaine had been dismissed. At that time he was living in the 2600 block of Morton Road in Riverton Township. Initially Howe had been charged with felony charges of delivery/manufacture of less than 50 grams of hydrocodone following an investigation by SSCENT.
