Motorcyclist dies from injuries.

GRAND RAPIDS — James Lee May, 46, of Orleans Township (Ionia County) died today as a result of injuries sustained in a single vehicle crash Saturday, July 25, 2020 on US 31 in Free Soil Township.

May was seriously injured Saturday morning in after he apparently attempted to make a lane change on US 31 south of Koenig Road, according to Mason County Sheriff Kim Cole. May was northbound on his 2017 Honda CRF250 and apparently lost control of the bike and fell to the ground. He was wearing a helmet but it fell off during the crash. According to MCSO Sgt. Adam Lamb, May was following his wife, who was on another motorcycle.

May was transported by ambulance to Munson Healthcare Manistee Hospital. He was then flown to Spectrum Health Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids.

The fatality is the second motorcycle traffic death in Mason County in one week. Jaramie Jones, 43, of Scottville died Saturday, July 18, 2020, following a motorcycle/Jeep crash at the intersection of Dennis and Johnson roads in Amber Township. The crash occurred about 1:30 p.m. Jones, who was the motorcyclist, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Michigan State Police Sgt. Dan Thomas. Jones was wearing a helmet.
