Man, 23, accidentally shoots grandfather.

MEADE TOWNSHIP – A 71-year-old man was accidentally shot in the abdomen by his 23-year-old grandson with a handgun Saturday afternoon, Dec. 21, in his home located in the 11000 of North Benson Road, near the Mason-Manistee counties line, said Michigan State Police Sgt. Dan Thomas.

The man is in stable condition following surgery, Thomas said.

“The grandson was showing the grandpa how to take the gun apart, and it accidentally discharged,” Thomas said. “He didn’t know it was loaded.”

Emergency personnel were called to the scene at 2:15 p.m. AeroMed was dispatched and landed near the scene. The man was then transported by helicopter to Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.

Assisting MSP were the Mason County Sheriff’s Office, Free Soil/Meade Fire Department, Grant Township Fire Department and Life EMS.

There were two accidental shootings in Mason County over the weekend.
