Freezing rain caused several crashes in Mason County Saturday afternoon. Two of the crashes resulted in serious injuries.
PERE MARQUETTE TOWNSHIP — At 4:13 p.m., a 19-year-old Hart man received serious injuries after the vehicle he was riding in lost control on US 31 south of the Chauvez Road overpass. The man was transported by ambulance to Spectrum Health Ludington Hospital and then to Spectrum Health Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids. According to Mason County Sheriff Kim Cole, the injuries were not life-threatening. Two others involved in the crash received minor injuries.
PERE MARQUETTE TOWNSHIP — At 4:34 p.m., Shirley Stahl, 78, of Hastings, was critically injured after the vehicle she was operating eastbound on Iris Road lost control on the icy road and left the road and rolled over, causing her to be pinned inside the vehicle. Stahl was transported by ambulance to Ludington hospital then to Butterworth. According to Sheriff Cole, she is listed in critical condition.
Other crashes caused by the freezing rain included:
– 4:01 p.m., single vehicle rollover crash, minor injuries, Lakeshore Drive south of Bradshaw Road, Pere Marquette Township.
– 4:04 p.m., single vehicle crash, no injuries, Scottville Road south of Chauvez Road, Eden Township.
– 4:13 p.m., single vehicle rollover crash, minor injuries, US 31 north of Meisenheimer Road overpass, Summit Township.
– 4:26 p.m., single vehicle crash, no injuries, Scottville Road south of Hawley Road, Eden Township.
– 4:27 p.m., multiple slide-offs, no damage or injuries, US 31 in Summit Township.
– 4:38 p.m., single vehicle crash, no injuries, Lincoln Road north of Mavis Road, Hamlin Township.
– 5:07 p.m., slide off, no damage or injuries, Hawley Road and Pere Marquette Highway, Summit Township.
– 5:39 p.m., single vehicle rollover crash, no injuries, Scottville Road south of Chauvez Road, Eden Township.
– 6:54 p.m., single vehicle crash, Chauvez Road west of Lister Road, Riverton Township.
Agencies responding to the crashes included Mason County Sheriff’s Office, Michigan State Police, Pere Marquette Township Fire Department, Ludington Fire Department, and Life EMS.
